Chinese stocks soar for celebrating the Year of the Tiger, but fund flow remains cautious

2022/02/07

After a torrid 2021, auspicious signs released from the policymakers for investors, are emerging that the bad narrative surrounding the Chinese equity market is shifting to the good. The four major A-share indexes opened higher on the first trading day of the Year of the Tiger. The Shanghai Composite Index rose above 3,400 points and closed up 2%, while the ChiNext Index softened after nearly 3,000 points. Turnover in the two cities edged up to 820 billion (RMB).

Before the holiday, the northbound funds of Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connect recorded a net sale, and the financing balance of the two markets also decreased. After the holiday, the northbound funds bought a net 5.5 billion (RMB). Although the Year of the Tiger may not prove to be as terrible for investors as its predecessor, it is not easy for investors to transit into a “hope” phase from “despair.”

Six new shares will begin to subscribe in the first week of the Year of the Tiger, including the domestic flu vaccine leader Hualan Vaccine (301207.SZ). Hillhouse Huaying, in which Tencent and Hillhouse teamed up to invest, was one of the war investors and holds 9% of the shares of Hualan Vaccine.
